Botulinum Toxin Type A
Botulinum toxin type A injectables use a botulism-related protein to block the transmission of neural signals to the facial muscles. This process prevents the muscles from contracting, causing them to relax. Muscles in a relaxed state result in the smoothing of wrinkles. Botulinum toxin type A injections should only be used to treat wrinkles of the upper third of the face, such as around the eyes, on the forehead, and between the brows.

Recovery
Injectable treatments are performed during an in-office procedure that takes less than an hour to complete. You may experience some mild bruising and swelling around your injection site. You may wear makeup immediately following your procedure. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours and avoid lying flat for four hours after XEOMIN® and BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.
Results
The full effects of your treatment will be visible within a few days of your treatment. The duration of your results will vary depending on the type of injectable used.
- BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® both produce results that last for around three months.
- BELOTERO BALANCE®, JUVÉDERM®, and Restylane® maintain their results for up to nine months.
- RADIESSE® produces results that can last for a year or longer.
Pain
No anesthesia is required for an injectable treatment. A topical anesthetic may be applied or a nerve block injection may be performed to minimize discomfort during treatment. Most patients don’t experience pain during recovery, but an over-the-counter pain reliever can be used to treat any associated discomfort.
Risks
Injectable treatments are the safest and most common cosmetic procedure performed. Risks are generally mild and rare. Possible complications can include bruising, redness, swelling, numbness, headache, and nausea. Allergic reactions are rare.

Do injectable treatments correct skin laxity that causes an aged appearance?
No. Injectable treatments fill wrinkles and increase collagen production, but they are not designed to restore skin elasticity. If you have mild or severe facial sagging, then you may need to consider a surgical procedure such as a facelift or brow lift to erase this sign of aging.
Are there non-surgical treatments available that provide a long-term solution to facial aging?
Currently, most injectable and laser treatments only provide results that last less than a year. Some RADIESSE® treatments can last up to two years. A surgical procedure is required to achieve longer-lasting results.
